Advanced Driving
So what is "advanced driving"?
It is based on a set of principles which guide EVERY action you take behind the wheel.
It puts you in full control of the vehicle so you will always be in the best position on the road, at the right speed and in the correct gear, for the conditions at the time. Higher levels of concentration and better observation skills allow you to anticipate hazards and plan accordingly, rather than reacting to them at the last minute. This systematic approach in turn leads to less wear and tear on the vehicle, greater fuel economy, less stress on the driver (and passengers), and a smoother journey.
This does not mean driving slowly as you will also be able to make good progress whenever it is safe to do so - all within the legal speed limits and showing due consideration to the prevailing conditions, other road users and the capabilities of your vehicle.
Why become an advanced driver?
Most drivers rely on what they learnt for their basic L-test as their passport to a lifetime of driving. Yet, studies have shown that simply accumulating years of experience is not enough to improve their driving. Indeed, many drivers actually get worse over time as bad habits develop and complacency takes over. Research undertaken at Brunel University shows that drivers who undertake further coaching develop measurable improvements in awareness of what is around them, driving skills and attitude. Advanced drivers spot hazards earlier leading to safer driving, less accidents, and they are less prone to the frustrations that can lead to road rage.
Advanced drivers take more pride in their driving, are less likely to blame others and are willing to take responsibility for on-the-road events. They are also better at cornering, changing gear, being in the right gear, keeping within the speed limit and maintaining a safe distance.
